Strategy's investors are reportedly shifting their focus away from its preferred stock, STRC, in favor of a competing crypto-backed security, SATA, offered by Strive. This shift is driven by several key factors that have investors reevaluating their positions.
Firstly, STRC's performance has been underwhelming, closing at $91.79 on Tuesday, its third-lowest since its launch in July 2025. This is a significant departure from its intended $100 par value, with trading nearly 8% below that mark. The historical pattern of STRC trading near its par value ahead of ex-dividend dates has been disrupted, with the stock failing to reach $100 since May 15, the ex-dividend date.
The primary reason for this underperformance is the persistent weakness in Bitcoin, STRC's historical trading partner. Bitcoin's current price of around $65,000 is a stark contrast to its October all-time high, causing a ripple effect on STRC's performance. Additionally, concerns about dividend coverage have emerged. Strategy's cash reserves, which previously provided up to 24 months of dividend coverage, have been used to repay $1.5 billion in convertible debt, reducing the coverage period to just seven months.
In contrast, Strive's SATA is gaining traction. It offers a higher annualized yield of approximately 13%, compared to STRC's 11.5%, and pays daily dividends, providing a more consistent income stream. SATA's debt-free status and its position at the top of the capital structure further enhance its appeal, especially for income-focused investors. The spread between STRC and SATA has widened significantly, with STRC trading at a roughly $8.20 discount to SATA's $99.99 price.
This shift in investor sentiment highlights a deeper trend in the market. As Bitcoin's price continues to fluctuate, investors are increasingly seeking stable, high-yielding alternatives. The market's response to STRC's underperformance suggests that a higher dividend rate may be necessary to restore demand and bring the security closer to its intended value. This situation underscores the dynamic nature of the crypto market and the importance of staying agile in investment strategies.
